HE-920 'Pamela'
Pamela is a Large Quarry Class locomotive and was built in 1906 by the Hunslet Engine Company of Leeds for the Penrhyn Slate Quarry in North Wales.
Pamela was delivered to Penrhyn on the 17th August 1906, along with sister engine 'Sybil Mary'. Pamela was later withdrawn from work with a defective boiler in 1951 and then rebuilt by Penrhyn Quarry with the boiler from ‘Bronllwyd', a Hudswell Clarke locomotive built in 1930. This resulted in Pamela having a distinctive appearance due to Bronllwyd's boiler being larger than that of a standard Large Quarry Class Hunslet. Between 1952 and 1954 Pamela was based at Port Penrhyn on the quarry's rail network, here she gained a cab to protect the crew from the poor seaside weather conditions. Pamela was finally withdrawn in 1958 with a defective firebox, being stored out of use until 1962 when the Penrhyn Quarry Railway closed. Pamela was put up for sale by the quarry and after spending time at various different sites moved to the Old Kiln Light Railway on 18th November 1984. In March 2013 Pamela was purchased by the Old Kiln Light Railway Society.
Pamela is currently subject to a fundraising appeal for her restoration, which requires the construction of a new boiler before she can steam again. If you would like to help out, please visit our Easyfund site.
