The History of OKLR

Originally founded in the early 1970s as the "Wey Valley Light Railway", this line was located around a disused pumping station in Farnham and in 1982 the land was sold for redevelopment, so the railway track and equipment were relocated to the “Old Kiln Museum”, now known as the "Rural Life Living Museum".

The line has since extended around the museum's perimeter, and a small stretch of the track serves the museum's heritage timber yard demonstration area.

The railway functions as a separate charity and compliments the museum. We are funded entirely by small fares per passenger and through donations. We are run by a team of dedicated volunteers who maintain the track, rolling stock, and locomotives, as well as operate the line on the days we open to the public. Find our more here.

More information on the history of the railway coming soon.
